Ear Pain / Ringing

How TMJ/TMD Affects the Ears

Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJ/TMD) can cause a range of symptoms that affect the ears. These include ear pain and a sensation of ringing in the ears, known as tinnitus.

The proximity of the temporomandibular joint to the ear canal means that issues with the jaw, such as misalignment or inflammation, can impact the ears. This can result in discomfort, pressure, or persistent earaches that are not related to infections or other ear conditions. Additionally, the abnormal joint function may irritate the auditory nerves, leading to tinnitus, which is often described as a ringing, buzzing, or humming sound in one or both ears.

Ear Pain and Pressure Misdiagnosis

TMJ-related ear pain and pressure are often mistaken for ear infections, despite being unrelated.

Tinnitus Intensity Linked to Jaw Movement

Tinnitus caused by TMJ/TMD can vary in intensity, and may worsen with jaw movement or stress.

Auditory Nerve Irritation from Jaw Dysfunction

TMJ/TMD can irritate auditory nerves, leading to persistent sounds like ringing, buzzing, or humming in the ears, commonly referred to as tinnitus.

If you’re experiencing these symptoms, it’s crucial to consider TMJ/TMD as a potential underlying cause. This is particularly true if you’re also dealing with related issues such as jaw pain, frequent headaches, earaches, or difficulty chewing and swallowing. These symptoms can often be interconnected and may indicate a deeper problem with the temporomandibular joint. Identifying TMJ/TMD early can help prevent the condition from worsening and improve your overall quality of life. Don’t ignore these warning signs—consult a healthcare professional to explore whether TMJ/TMD might be contributing to your discomfort and to discuss appropriate treatment options.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ear Pain Treatment in New England

What are common ear pain causes besides infection?

While infections are a common culprit, other ear pain causes include temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, jaw clenching, arthritis, dental issues, and nerve irritation. Many people don’t realize that TMJ dysfunction is often behind unexplained or recurring ear pain.

Can TMJ cause ear pain and ringing in the ears?

Yes, TMJ can cause ear pain due to the joint’s proximity to the ear canal. Inflammation or misalignment in the jaw can place pressure on surrounding nerves and tissues, resulting in TMJ ear pain and even ringing in the ears, also known as tinnitus.

What are the best options for TMJ ear pain relief?

Effective ear pain relief starts with identifying whether TMJ is the underlying cause. At our New England centre, we provide custom oral appliances, therapeutic exercises, and other non-invasive treatments that help reduce pressure on the jaw joint and alleviate both TMJ ear pain and discomfort.

How is TMJ ringing in ears treated?

TMJ ringing in ears (tinnitus) is treated by addressing the jaw dysfunction itself. By realigning the TMJ and reducing inflammation through therapy or appliance use, many patients experience significant reductions in both ear ringing and associated pain.

Beautiful experience. My third child, was my first with ties. Dr. Kaplan took his time showing me images of my sons ties and explaining them to me so I understood them more. He also made the atmosphere very comfortable! We had all 3 ties released (tongue, lip, and cheek) done in about 10 minutes. Dr. Kaplan checked in with me about 5 minutes after the procedure and explained everything to me about follow up appointments with lactation and chiro and how to massage my babies mouth post-op. Highly recommend for infant tie issues!

I have only been for initial exam and consultation, so this review is for that. I love the office. They have great technology and a nice ambiance if you can believe it. Pretty rare to find a dentist with nice views but I had beautiful trees to look at outside the window while I sat in the chair. The tech and dentist were so caring and really listened to me and took their time to make me feel at ease. I have had some less than savory and even traumatic experiences at other dentists , I can say that I feel very comfortable and trusting with Dr David. I think she is a brilliant doctor who really cares about people and looks at the whole picture , not just your teeth. I’m happy I found her and ready to start my treatment plan. This is by far not the cheapest dentist but I only have one set of teeth, so trusting myself to the best.
