Facial Pain & Headaches

Do You Experience Facial Pain and Headaches?

Facial Pain

Facial pain associated with TMJ is typically concentrated around the jaw area, but it can radiate to other regions of the face, including the cheeks, temples, and even the area around the eyes. Patients may describe the pain as a dull ache, and others will experience sharp or stabbing sensations, particularly during activities that involve jaw movement, such as chewing, speaking, or yawning.

The pain may be accompanied by a feeling of tightness or pressure in the face, which can be exacerbated by clenching or grinding the teeth. The discomfort might affect one side of the face (unilateral) or affect both sides (bilateral), depending on the extent of the joint involvement.

Headaches

Patients come to our office frequently complaining about headaches. The types of headaches that our patients experience may include:

Tension-type Headaches: These are the most common headaches associated with TMJ. Our patient symptoms may include band-like tightness or pressure around the forehead, temples, or back of the head. The tension in the muscles of the jaw and face due to TMJ can contribute to these headaches. They may worsen during stress or prolonged jaw activity.

Migraine-like Headaches: Some patients with TMJ may experience migraine-like headaches, characterized by throbbing pain, sensitivity to light and sound, and sometimes nausea. While the exact link between TMJ and migraines is not fully understood, it is believed that constant muscle tension and joint inflammation may trigger these headaches in some people.

Referred Pain: TMJ can also cause referred pain, where discomfort originating in the jaw joint is perceived in other areas of the head. So instead of jaw pain, they may experience sinus headaches or even earaches, due to the close proximity of the temporomandibular joint to the ears and sinuses.

Frequently Asked Questions About Facial Pain and Headache Relief in New England

What is a TMJ headache and how is it different from a migraine?

A TMJ headache often comes from muscle strain or tension in the jaw joint and surrounding muscles, while a TMJ migraine can be triggered when jaw dysfunction affects nerves and blood flow. Although symptoms overlap, proper evaluation helps distinguish between the two.

What are common signs that my headaches are related to TMJ?

If your headaches are paired with jaw clicking, stiffness, or facial pain, they may be TMJ-related. TMJ facial pain often radiates into the temples, behind the eyes, or the back of the head, making it easy to mistake for standard tension headaches.

What TMJ headache treatment options are available?

TMJ headache treatment may include oral appliances, myofunctional therapy, trigger point therapy, or lifestyle adjustments to relieve strain on the jaw joint. These therapies are designed to reduce muscle tension, restore alignment, and provide long-term relief.

Can TMJ migraines cause facial pain too?

Yes. TMJ migraines frequently come with TMJ facial pain because the trigeminal nerve, which controls sensation in the face, can be irritated by jaw joint dysfunction. Treating the TMJ often reduces both headache intensity and facial discomfort.

How do I know if I need professional care for my TMJ headaches?

If you experience frequent headaches or migraines along with jaw tension, clenching, or facial pain, it’s best to consult a specialist. A targeted TMJ evaluation can identify the root cause and recommend the most effective treatment for lasting relief.

Beautiful experience. My third child, was my first with ties. Dr. Kaplan took his time showing me images of my sons ties and explaining them to me so I understood them more. He also made the atmosphere very comfortable! We had all 3 ties released (tongue, lip, and cheek) done in about 10 minutes. Dr. Kaplan checked in with me about 5 minutes after the procedure and explained everything to me about follow up appointments with lactation and chiro and how to massage my babies mouth post-op. Highly recommend for infant tie issues!

I have only been for initial exam and consultation, so this review is for that. I love the office. They have great technology and a nice ambiance if you can believe it. Pretty rare to find a dentist with nice views but I had beautiful trees to look at outside the window while I sat in the chair. The tech and dentist were so caring and really listened to me and took their time to make me feel at ease. I have had some less than savory and even traumatic experiences at other dentists , I can say that I feel very comfortable and trusting with Dr David. I think she is a brilliant doctor who really cares about people and looks at the whole picture , not just your teeth. I’m happy I found her and ready to start my treatment plan. This is by far not the cheapest dentist but I only have one set of teeth, so trusting myself to the best.
