TMJ Neck Pain

Understand the Connection Between TMJ & Neck Pain

You may be experiencing neck pain because the muscles and nerves in the jaw, neck, and shoulders are interconnected. When the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is misaligned or inflamed, it can cause tension and strain in the surrounding muscles, including those in the neck. This can lead to persistent neck pain, stiffness, and discomfort.

Additionally, pain may radiate from the jaw to the neck, causing further tension and even headaches. If you are experiencing neck pain along with other symptoms like jaw pain, clicking or popping sounds when moving the jaw, or difficulty opening the mouth, TMJ/TMD may be the underlying cause.

Jaw-to-Neck Connection

The muscles in your jaw and neck are intricately connected. When your TMJ is under stress, the tension can radiate to your neck, causing discomfort. This tightness often leads to difficulty moving your head freely and can exacerbate other issues like headaches.

Inflammation & Strain

When TMJ inflammation occurs, it creates a ripple effect across connected muscle groups. Neck pain, alongside jaw pain, can be a significant sign that your TMJ is misaligned or not functioning correctly, requiring attention.

Frequently Asked Questions About Neck Pain Relief in New England

Can TMJ cause neck pain?

Yes, TMJ disorders can absolutely contribute to neck discomfort. If you’ve been wondering, “can TMJ cause neck pain?”, the answer is yes. The temporomandibular joint is closely connected to the muscles and nerves that support the head, neck, and shoulders. When the jaw is misaligned or under stress, it can lead to tension, stiffness, and radiating pain in the neck.

How are TMJ and neck pain related?

The link between TMJ and neck pain lies in the muscular and postural connections between the jaw and cervical spine. TMJ dysfunction can alter head posture and strain the muscles that stabilize the neck. Over time, this imbalance can lead to chronic neck pain, headaches, and even shoulder tension.

What are the best options for neck pain relief when TMJ is involved?

For lasting neck pain relief, it’s essential to treat the underlying TMJ dysfunction. At the TMJ & Sleep Therapy Centre of New England, we offer non-invasive therapies that focus on jaw alignment, muscle relaxation, and neuromuscular balance—all of which help reduce neck tension and improve posture.

What causes neck pain from TMJ disorders?

Neck pain from TMJ is often caused by muscle overuse, jaw clenching, poor posture, or misalignment of the bite. These factors can lead to compensation patterns that strain the neck and upper back muscles. Without proper treatment, the pain may become chronic and affect sleep, focus, and daily comfort.

Where can I find neck pain treatment near me that addresses TMJ?

If you’re looking for neck pain treatment near me, especially when TMJ may be involved, our centre in New England offers a comprehensive evaluation and treatment plan. Beautiful experience. My third child, was my first with ties. Dr. Kaplan took his time showing me images of my sons ties and explaining them to me so I understood them more. He also made the atmosphere very comfortable! We had all 3 ties released (tongue, lip, and cheek) done in about 10 minutes. Dr. Kaplan checked in with me about 5 minutes after the procedure and explained everything to me about follow up appointments with lactation and chiro and how to massage my babies mouth post-op. Highly recommend for infant tie issues!

I have only been for initial exam and consultation, so this review is for that. I love the office. They have great technology and a nice ambiance if you can believe it. Pretty rare to find a dentist with nice views but I had beautiful trees to look at outside the window while I sat in the chair. The tech and dentist were so caring and really listened to me and took their time to make me feel at ease. I have had some less than savory and even traumatic experiences at other dentists , I can say that I feel very comfortable and trusting with Dr David. I think she is a brilliant doctor who really cares about people and looks at the whole picture , not just your teeth. I’m happy I found her and ready to start my treatment plan. This is by far not the cheapest dentist but I only have one set of teeth, so trusting myself to the best.
