Explore Trigger Point Injections & How They Can Help

At Dentistry by Dr. David, The Bolton Center for Dental Wellness, we have used trigger point injections for pain treatment of our TMJ patients for almost two decades. It is one of the many treatments that we offer, and we work with our patients to develop a treatment plan that is tailored to their specific needs and symptoms.

    What Are Trigger Point Injections?

We may use Trigger Point Injections as a form of therapy to treat painful areas of muscle that contain “trigger points”, or knots of muscle that form when muscles do not “relax”.

How Do We Decide to Use Trigger Point Injections?

Based on a detailed history that is collected prior to the appointment and after a detailed discussion with one of the members of her TMJ care team, Dr. David will consider this input as she evaluates each patient’s symptoms and perform a physical examination to identify the location of the trigger points and assess the severity of the TMJ dysfunction.

How Are Trigger Point Injections Performed?

The procedure for performing trigger point injections for TMJ dysfunction typically involves the following steps:

    • One the trigger point is identified, the area to be injected is cleaned and sterilized, and the patient may be given a local topical anesthetic to numb the skin and reduce discomfort during the procedure.
    • For the actual treatment, we inject a local anesthetic, often combined with a corticosteroid or other medication, directly into the trigger points located in the muscles surrounding the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

What are the Benefits of Trigger Point Injections?

When the decision is made to use trigger point injections in our office the benefits to our patients include:

Pain relief: Trigger point injections can provide immediate relief from the pain associated with TMJ dysfunction by directly targeting the trigger points in the affected muscles.

Improved range of motion: By reducing muscle tension and pain, trigger point injections can help improve our patient’s jaw mobility and function.

Reduced inflammation: Corticosteroids are sometimes included in the injection solution, which can help reduce inflammation in the muscles surrounding the TMJ, further alleviating pain and promoting healing.

Minimally invasive: Trigger point injections are performed right in our office and are a minimally invasive treatment option for TMJ dysfunction with little to no downtime required for our patients!

Do I Need to Rest My Jaw Post the Injections?

After the injection, we may instruct our patient to rest their jaw and avoid strenuous activity for a short period of time.

How Long Before I Have Pain Relief?

Pain relief from the injection may be immediate or may take a few days to fully take effect.

Beautiful experience. My third child, was my first with ties. Dr. Kaplan took his time showing me images of my sons ties and explaining them to me so I understood them more. He also made the atmosphere very comfortable! We had all 3 ties released (tongue, lip, and cheek) done in about 10 minutes. Dr. Kaplan checked in with me about 5 minutes after the procedure and explained everything to me about follow up appointments with lactation and chiro and how to massage my babies mouth post-op. Highly recommend for infant tie issues!

I have only been for initial exam and consultation, so this review is for that. I love the office. They have great technology and a nice ambiance if you can believe it. Pretty rare to find a dentist with nice views but I had beautiful trees to look at outside the window while I sat in the chair. The tech and dentist were so caring and really listened to me and took their time to make me feel at ease. I have had some less than savory and even traumatic experiences at other dentists , I can say that I feel very comfortable and trusting with Dr David. I think she is a brilliant doctor who really cares about people and looks at the whole picture , not just your teeth. I’m happy I found her and ready to start my treatment plan. This is by far not the cheapest dentist but I only have one set of teeth, so trusting myself to the best.
